Kinnecome said he plans to share his prize with grandchildren, saving only enough for a trip to watch the New England Patriots play a home game in Massachusetts.

“The last time I saw the Patriots play, I was six rows from the top of the stadium and the players were a little bigger than ants,” he recalled for lottery officials in Albuquerque. “I think this time I can probably get better seats.”

Kinnecome purchased his lucky ticket at the Elks Lodge at 2290 Hamilton Dr. in Alamogordo.

In recent weeks five Otero County residents have claimed large Scratcher prizes. From Alamogordo, Wilhelmine Novotny won $27,000; Hector Del Villar, $5,000; Darren Brooks, $3,000; and Frank Adler, $1,000. From Tularosa, Rita Baldonado won $1,000.

Lottery players can now check their own tickets for prizes using countertop ticket checkers or self-service lottery vending machines located in a dozen Otero County stores. The ticket checkers also remind players to sign prize-winning tickets.

Legislative Lottery Scholarships

Sales of New Mexico Lottery games fund a college scholarship program. Since its inception in 1996, the New Mexico Lottery has raised $438 million for public education and more than 61,000 students have attended college on Legislative Lottery Scholarships.

As of the Spring 2009 semester, 2,000 high school graduates and GED recipients from Otero County have received $8.4 million in Legislative Lottery Scholarships.
