Alfredo Romero was the prize winner, but it was the store clerk
who became overwhelmed.
On Friday, the Santa Rosa resident took his Roadrunner
Cash™ ticket for the Aug. 20 drawing to Allsup’s Store No. 291 to have it
checked for prizes. After scanning the ticket’s barcode through the New Mexico
Lottery sales terminal, the clerk printed a receipt documenting a $110,000 prize.
“I think she was more excited than I was,” Romero recalled. “She started crying.”
Romero, who said he likes to take things slow and easy, waited until Monday to claim
his prize at lottery headquarters in Albuquerque.
He brought nephew Raymond Baca and cousin Virginio Baca, Jr. with him. Jokingly,
the younger men teased their prize-winning relative about suddenly being a very
eligible bachelor.
“I’m too old for any of that,” Romero shot back.
The 66-year-old retiree, who typically buys a quick-pick ticket for every Roadrunner
Cash drawing, plans to use his windfall to remodel his house. First up are
new floors.
Romero matched the Aug. 20 winning numbers of 4, 5, 11, 15 and 32. He purchased
his winning ticket at Allsup’s Store No. 291 at 1485 Will Rogers Dr. in Santa Rosa.
This lottery retailer has sold nine other large prize-winning tickets ranging between
$1,000 and $15,000.
